What is the VFW?
The Veterans of Foreign wars was established in 1899 so military veterans could join together to assist others who were in need from the wars. They had no medical care and were basically forming together to help ea other in times of need. It was built as a support organization when there was no support for the men and women who fought to defend this great country.
The chapters started out in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Colorado but quickly grew to where it is in all 50 states and many countries around the world. It is an organization that now does much more for our veterans by doing community volunteer work, providing assistance to veterans both financially and emotionally and they even have a scholarship fund for helping our younger generations with college.
VFW memberships have been decreasing over the years for many reasons. The biggest reason is during WWII so many men and women fought for our nation that there were many more people to choose from. Today with all the cutbacks, there are less numbers to choose from but that does not mean it needs to die. The VFW fights for our veteran rights on Capitol Hill on a daily basis and gives our veterans a voice when it comes to cost cutting and stripping away of our benefits.
The VFW has two different ways to be a member, you can be a member and pay annually or you can be a member and pay for a life membership. The life membership lowers as you get older but the highest being those under 30 with a rate of $425. You can even spread these payments over the course of 12 months so if you don’t have the money up front, you can pay for it in monthly installments for one yr.
Join your local VFW and help keep our Veterans benefits going.
