8 step Moving Guide: Utilities

4 Steps to a Seamless Move of Your Utilities

utilitiesA seamless move involves more than just getting your stuff from place to place. You will want to be sure your utilities are set up at your new home so you can turn on the lights, cook a hot meal and go online when you arrive.

Transferring utilities requires a bit of advance planning, but with these tips in mind, you’ll be ready to flip the switch with ease.

  1. Don’t wait until the last minute. Set your utilities plan in motion three weeks before your move date. Last-minute scrambling will leave you frazzled and dismayed if you have to pay additional costs or you have to wait for new services to be turned or installed.
  2. Make a list of all your utilities and contact them. The ones that usually come to mind are electricity, gas, water and phone, but don’t forget your Internet, television, garbage or any other monthly services tied to your location. Let them know your move date and schedule to have service at your new place started either on your move date or a day prior. You can use thisMoving.com tool to find new utility providers. And remember to schedule the utilities have the utilities at your current place shut off a day or two after your move date in case you need to return.
  3. Get information on your current balances. Make sure you are paid up. If you put down a deposit, find out how to get it back.
  4. Before you leave your old place, check the meters. Write down the readings. In case of a billing discrepancy, you’ll want to have that information handy.

Once you’re in your new place and the utilities are taken care of, treat yourself to a hot shower and tune into some soothing music.
